Africa! What wonderful thoughts come to mind when you imagine an African Adventure?

The amazing wildlife! Incredible birds. The excitement of exploring terrain that belongs to them. Gorgeous big skies! Fresh air and unspoiled land. Music as you gaze out a star-filled nights. Peaceful communing with nature. Heart thumping adventure!

When you dream of exotic adventures, does an African safari come to mind? When you think of Africa, what do you see?

You are the hero of this story – a story of adventure set in Cape Town, the Kalahari, Victoria Falls and Okavango Delta. You face unimaginable odds to achieve your dream, and yet you do it! This is part of your legacy – your future history. You are making a movie of your latest journey, and this one takes place in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe!

If you are an adventurous nerd like me, ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you an adventurous spirit seeking a once-in-a-lifetime magical safari in the wilds of Africa?
  • Have you always wanted to see the power and majesty of African wildlife in person?
  • Would you love to truly experience natural Africa, with all the luxury elements taken care of for you?
  • Could you see yourself on a real adventure QUEST in Africa?

Then join me on this MAGICAL trip of a lifetime to one of the most diverse ecosystems on Planet Earth!

I’m Patricia Tallman, owner of Quest Retreats, and a complete nerd and travel junkie. I come from the world of acting and stunt work, and through a series of fortunate events, have morphed into the person who has this extraordinary life, of leading you on the adventures of your dreams!

Read more about Patricia.

Africa changed me from a person who didn’t know how to connect to myself, to nature much less others, into a person now deeply connected to my spirit, my heart and my community. Travel showed me that connection. Africa can show you too.

I’ll be joined by Amy Attenbourgh, local guide and founder of Wild Again, Africa! Amy and I met in the Londolozi reserve in South Africa where she was a guide, and I a guest. I didn’t know it at the time, though I hoped that this was a life changing experience. When it came time for me to plan this African adventure, I consulted Amy for the most Magical itinerary we could devise.

She unhesitantly waxed poetic about Botswana, sharing it’s marvelous history, wild unique landscape, and hordes of beautiful birds and animals who flourished, protected in this country.

Her enthusiasm sold me, for how could I doubt an experienced Africa safari guide on the best spots to see in her continent?

We have been divided and disconnected all over the world. We may have lost sight of what it means to be in touch with Mother Nature, other people and our deepest self. Maybe you have felt a bit lost and wonder what is next for you in this life.

Being in Africa is a profound experience. It’s hard to convey the energy you feel standing on ancient land that has remained unspoiled for millenia. The Earth has a special power here, where humanity was born. The animals are an expression of the wild purity of her here. We don’t have many places left where we can feel that.

You have been through SO much in recent years! You need to have something to look forward to. An experience that will recharge you, reconnect you to yourself, give you energy and hope-filled anticipation for what’s next for you.

You deserve this wild and magical experience.

With most tours you get out what you put into it. But with Quest Retreats you get so much more because Pat puts so much more than expected into the planning, the special events, the treats, the rewards and the genuine affection for everyone. I would go anywhere with Quest Retreats.

Sign up today! You’ll be so happy you did.

I want some magic...

Imagine yourself in these scenes:

  • In a private vehicle, our local guides move us amongst elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, big cats, small cubs … in the wilds of Africa!
  • We dine under the stars listening to the sounds of wildlife, as we tell stories about our day with new best friends.
  • You fly like a bird in a helicopter ride over one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world!
  • San bushmen teach you to track – as a metaphor for tracking your own life.
  • Hike with a local tribe through a World Heritage Site.
  • Enjoying luxury touches in accommodation and food all along the journey!
  • Telling friends, family, and co-workers about what you did on safari in Africa! You have bragging rights!

Why Botswana and Zimbabwe?

Botswana and Zimbabwe are ecological heavens for the animals and the land! A World Heritage site! The people of Botswana made the brave decision to limit the number of annual visitors, and the rooms available to them, for the conservation of the land and animals. This is a rare and exclusive experience!

Seasons: Why we’re going when we’re going

December is the BEST time for wildlife viewing in all Africa! We are visiting Botswana and Zimbabwe in their summer months. This is the ideal season to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world and the second-largest game reserve in the world. Wildlife migrates through the park with the seasons and during summer months animals congregate around the pans in the Deception Valley area. There is an abundance of wildlife in the reserve at this time of year.

The Okavango Delta – Zambezi River – Victoria Falls

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is also beautiful at this time of the year as the bush flushes beautiful green, the migratory birds return and there is an abundance of life to be seen. Beautiful dramatic skies. Clean, clear air. Lush with life.

The Zambezi River and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe are at a level that visibility is not obstructed by too much spray. The lower water levels mean you can see more of the impressive rock face of the falls themselves. Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool are also likely to be open. For those real adrenaline junkies this is the best time of the year to white water raft.

It is warm, mostly sunny. It only rains every now and then. Early mornings are the most comfortable, with average temperatures of about 18°C/64°F. Our game drives to visit the wildlife will be in the early mornings and late afternoons into evening when the animals are more active.

…..WELL … Guess what?

There are VERY FEW tours that have the level of excellence I require for my exclusive groups. Not only that, but you have to take several tours from different operators to cover all the locations and experiences that I want to have on a gorgeous trip like this.

We take all the guesswork out of planning an epic journey like this. We curate the best experience and know which excursions are awesome and what are a waste of precious time and funds.

You don’t have to worry about the quality of food, or hope you can find something safe to eat. We take care of all that for you.

It’s a very small group! Only 8 rooms! Everyone will receive lots of personal attention.

AND, I interview everyone to make sure we are the best fit possible.

This experience is for you if you…

  • Are excited about the idea of an African Safari but didn’t know how safe it was.
  • Would love to go to Africa and didn’t want to go alone.
  • Dig science fiction, fantasy in books and on the screen!
  • Crave some new adventures and make some friends
  • Love the idea of a more personal, mind expanding adventure than you could have elsewhere!
  • Do not want to stress out and figure out everything to do on an epic trip like this.
  • Would love to be pampered AND have a fantastic adventure!

This is NOT for you if…

  • You get violently sick around Meerkats.
  • You have severe medical conditions.
  • You cannot walk a moderately easy couple of hours.
  • You do not want to have new experiences that might take you out of your comfort zone – despite the adventure of a lifetime.
  • You do not want to have fun or meet new besties and beasties.
  • ~ Redheads scare you.

Our EPIC, Magical and Wild Itinerary

December 7-11 (4 nights) Cape Town!

We gather together for our Magical Safari!

We will meet in Cape Town – an iconic city from which to launch our adventure together.

It also gives us time to get to know each other, to adjust to the time difference, and start to relax into the adventure of a lifetime.

The southernmost corner of Africa is by far one of the most incredibly beautiful and diverse places on the continent. It is a place where the Indian and South Atlantic oceans connect and collide with a mountainous and ancient land. You can feel the powerful energy of this place, home to Cape Town, one of the world’s most beautiful and culturally-rich cities, which itself is watched over by one of the New Seven Natural Wonders of the World: Table Mountain. The Cape is surrounded by a landscape so unique, so awe-inspiring in its offerings, it is no wonder that those who first discovered it called it the Fairest Cape.

You will be energized and ready to open up to profound changes by the ancient connection to Africa at this incredibly powerful landscape.

On our excursions you’ll see exotic terrain, native plants and flowers, and wildlife you’ve never seen before!

Our Accommodation in Cape Town: The Onyx Luxury Apartment Hotel

Day 1 – Peninsula Tour

  • Cape Point, Penguins at Boulders Beach
  • Chapman’s Peak Drive
  • Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.
  • A locally-sourced picnic on the go, easily adapted to suit any dietary requirement.

The Cape Peninsula- Where the mountains are engulfed by the sea, baboons temporarily cause traffic and penguins are dwarfed by the boulders they call home.

Hopping between the fishing villages, we will slowly round the peninsula – the southwestern corner of Africa. Venturing south along the Cape Peninsula, visiting the quirky fishing village, Kalk Bay, recently voted top 10 coolest neighbourhoods in the world. We will spend some time exploring this little neighbourhood known for its interesting shops, vast selection of restaurants and stunning views.

Onwards to Boulders Beach – home to a large colony of the very entertaining yet endangered African Penguin. I was blown away by this surreal and picturesque beach whilst admiring these fluffy local inhabitants. They are used to people and feel perfectly safe wandering among sunbathers!

We’ll capture the moment in iconic photo ops as you explore Cape Point (the south-easternmost tip of Africa). From the most spectacular viewpoints to the most isolated and serene beaches, a fascinating maritime history, and plenty of unique fauna and flora. Don’t be surprised if you find baboons and ostriches gracing the beaches here!

Continue home via Chapman’s Peak, one of the most spectacular marine drives in the world. Dinner is on your own as you feel best. I want to give us time to rest and adjust to the time zone. We will have a selection of restaurants available for you to choose from, and we can decide to head out together, if you wish!

I was hoping for the trip of a lifetime and it ended up being so much more.  Every day we stepped outside was a new adventure waiting for us.  Since Pat pre-screened our group, everyone got along perfectly and each of us contributed to making this adventure the best it could be.  Make no mistake, Quest Retreats is not some travel company where all you do is excursions.  Pat had sought out all the greatest things to see ..As a single man who enjoys traveling this trip was beyond my imagination.  I plan on taking more trips with Pat, if you are interested in a wonderful adventure I highly suggest you look into a Quest with Pat.

We will walk through the colourful, historical streets of the Bo-Kaap, an area of Cape Town formerly known as the Malay Quarter. It may be one of the most photographed areas of the Mother City due to the brightly painted houses and quaint cobbled streets.

Our second day in Cape Town will be celebrated with a Welcome Dinner Feast!

The Quest Retreats adventure was a blast! …it was more fun than I could imagine in a trip! Pat impressed me with the preparation she put in … We were well informed what to expect, and what we needed to have with us. The pacing of events was spot on, and things went off flawlessly. The choice of events was stellar!

The outings were complemented with morning meditation, and deep conversation… it helped me appreciate the outings more and connect with my fellow questers. December 11-13 (3 nights) The Kalahari Plains – Botswana

We fly to Botswana! All of our camps in Botswana are deluxe accommodations.

Once home to several thousand Bushmen, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana is one of the largest protected areas in Africa. This semi-arid wonderland is important not just as a conservation area for threatened species like lion and brown hyena, but also as a living, breathing symbol of pristine Earth that remains mostly free of destructive human influence (for now).

Situated on an immense pan, Kalahari Plains lies in a remote corner of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. A place famed for vast herds of antelope followed by abundant legendary black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah and feisty honey badgers. It also offers some of the best summer (December) wildlife viewing in Africa. What we love about it are its massive vistas, uninterrupted night skies and stark beauty that create space for your entire being to breathe into.

Animals we have the chance of seeing include gemsbok, eland, hartebeest, wildebeest, springbok, zebra, jackals, brown hyena, aardwolf, black-maned lions, wild dogs, bat eared fox, cheetah, honey badgers and more!

Located in the middle of Botswana, the CKGR is wonderfully big: 52 000 square kilometres, or 10% of the country’s surface area.

The second largest protected area in Africa, more than twice the size of Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Our Camp – Eight cool canvas luxury guest tents – each feature a rooftop sleep-out platform with unequalled views of the night sky.

Each suite includes your cosy bed in your main cabin area AND a sleep-out rooftop platform from which to enjoy the incredible night skies.

These camps are designed and built to reflect the traditional safari style and are tasteful canvas constructions, often raised off the ground on wooden decks. Located in exceptional wildlife and wilderness areas, all offer superb facilities and accommodation.

Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and innovative insulated canvas walls and roofs keep the temperatures inside comfortable. This is in keeping with our ethos that as we do good for ourselves, we do good for the planet.

Respectful San Bushman experiences provide insights into a unique culture and allow us to step back in time, learning from the wisdom of a people who have thrived off this harsh landscape because they live in sync with nature’s rhythms.

The annual transformations belie a sense of timelessness and authentic San cultural experiences give insights into an ancient yet sustainable way of life.

Excellent access to the vastness of the Central Kalahari!

There is a refreshing pool and unique architecture make the desert temperatures delightful! While the reserve is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, there is one animal that is rather obviously absent, the human being. It is this lack of human traffic, combined with the park’s lack of infrastructure, that makes for a marvelously authentic African experience.

Daily routine:

Each day we will rise early to meet for tea, coffee snacks served in the guest area before heading into the bush and experiencing the awakening of the vast Kalahari. Our Morning Safari into the bush in our private landcruiser vehicles with guides and trackers.

Then breakfast awaits overlooking the camp waterhole…visited by the animals and birds!

After breakfast – cool off in the pool or nap!  I may have an activity planned, such as a tracking exercise or meditation.

Our gourmet lunch!

Then an Afternoon Game drive, as the sun goes down and the animals come out!

Each evening we will feast together and recount the day.

We will have some star gazing and storytelling, perhaps even some music!
Quest Retreats Special: Journey back in time on a guided walk with the San Bushmen to learn about the fascinating and ancient lifestyle of the San people.

December 14-18 (4 nights) We travel to the OKAVANGO DELTA, Botswana.

Chitabe Camp’s location places it at the heart of a complex and beautiful mosaic of habitats, and this diversity results in this camp being one of the most storied of all Botswana’s areas. Experienced, passionate guides are inspired by the intricate and dynamic landscapes to deliver wildlife experiences few other locations can match.

One of the highlights of this camp is its setting amongst a variety of ancient, slow-growing tree species and idyllic rooms are accessed from a raised wooden walkway that weaves between these enormous trees.

Situated in the northwestern corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site and is the largest inland delta in the world, one of the most exquisite on the planet, stretching over 15,000 square kilometres, an oasis in the desert and is famed for its incredible diversity of wildlife, in particular big cats and wild dogs!

  • 530 Species of birds
  • 160 Species of mammals
  • 155 Species of reptiles
  • 35 Species of amphibians
  • 1500 Species of plants

The magnificent Okavango River sprawls out over the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert forming this flourishing oasis featuring countless meandering waterways and crystal clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife.

The unusual mix of Okavango and Kalahari makes for an excellent home to an abundant array of herbivores: giraffe, buffalo, red lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant, which in turn support the larger predators: lion, leopard, spotted hyena, cheetah and wild dog.

The refreshing pool and gym for you die-hards, as well as numerous hidden nooks looking over the wilderness provide the ideal locations to get moving too AND enjoy the wild!

Commonly spotted animals include: lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and over 530 species of bird.

Twice daily we will venture out on game drives or engage in full-day excursions in private 4×4 vehicles following the seasonal movements of the wildlife.

Our Camp: Eight elevated, Meru-style luxury guest tents provide the perfect human habitat, while a stroll along the elevated walkways connecting them to the main area is a safari experience in itself.

The common areas where we gather for food and drinks are best described by the photos! Open and inviting, our camps will be welcoming and comfortable while still evoking the adventure of Africa!

Activities:  Similar to our previous camp, our activities include: Day and night drives and guided walks showcase the varied wildlife and landscapes of the Okavango margins. We will enjoy a number of wonderful activities such as game viewing, fishing, bird watching.

This camp is set into the forest edge. The walkways thread in and amongst the ancient trees.

The game viewing is incredible – lions, leopards, elephants. Prepare to be enthralled by them! Such big open spaces and we will be the only humans there!

Quest Retreats Special: Learn more about the wild dog packs of the area; if we’re lucky, you’ll see some of these endangered carnivores.

December 18-20 (2 nights) Victoria River Falls, Zimbabwe
